Superintendent Chad Brakke | Cedar Grove-Belgium Area School District
The Cedar Grove – Belgium School District recently found itself at the center of controversy following statements made during the Superintendent search process. A 17-page leadership profile report was developed by the search firm, which included input from various stakeholders of the school district.
According to the Cedar Grove-Belgium Board of Education, the report was created after meetings with focus groups consisting of school board members, staff, community members, and students. The report aimed to provide transparency to potential candidates by listing characteristics mentioned by participants in each focus group. However, some comments made during these sessions have stirred up debate.
A disclaimer on page 11 of the report clarifies that comments made during focus group sessions represent personal opinions of individuals. Among the statements that raised concerns were those made by a board member and a staff member. The board member expressed the opinion that the next Superintendent "Must match the make-up of our community (conservative, Christian values) and 'conservative politically/fiscally.'" Meanwhile, a staff member stated, "We are a conservative community and we will be happiest with someone with those types of values." These comments were later removed from the report.
The Cedar Grove-Belgium Board of Education emphasized that the actual profile of the ideal candidate for the Superintendent position, outlined on pages 3 and 4 of the report, did not contain any discriminatory requirements. The district asserts its commitment to being an equal opportunity employer that does not discriminate based on religious or political beliefs.
As the search for the next Superintendent continues, the Cedar Grove – Belgium School District faces scrutiny over the handling of personal opinions expressed during the focus group sessions. The district's reputation as an inclusive and non-discriminatory employer is being closely monitored in light of these recent developments.
